Danny Green’s injury time winner sent Charlton eight points clear at the top. Meanwhile, two late goals at the Bescot saw Walsall come from behind to defeat Sheffield Wednesday.

Green’s booking – his fifth of the season – means he will miss Saturday’s game at Leyton Orient. With Scott Wagstaff missing this game through injury, Chris Powell may have some thinking to do before the trip through the Blackwall Tunnel.

Wagstaff looked fine and, hopefully, his injury is minor and he will be fit to play on Saturday.

Chris Powell made one young fan’s day when he gave him one of the balls the team were warmong up with, a gesture warmly applauded by the travelling fans.

Yeovil took an early lead when Jonathan Obika latched on to a misdirected Kermorgant header to score with a spectacular overhead kick. The lead was short lived however, as slack marking allowed Danny Hollands to nod Green’s left-wing corner home, when he rose unopposed at the far post.

The swirling wind made Green’s corners a nightmare for the Yeovil defence to deal with all afternoon, two having to be cleared off the line.

Charlton looked much the better of the two sides and Morrison spurned a great chance to give the visitors lead, when he headed a splendid Green cross wide. Bradley Wright-Phillips also went close to ending his recent goal draught.

It looked only a matter of time before Charlton went ahead but more poor marking at a corner gifted home skipper, Paul Huntington, the opportunity to put the hosts back in front.

Again, Charlton reacted well, moved up a gear and levelled on the hour mark. Kermorgant was brought down, in a central position, 25 yards out. The Frenchman took the free-kick himself and fired the ball into the keeper’s top right-hand corner.

The last half hour was played almost exclusively in Yeovil’s half, with the host’s goal living a charmed life. Charlton continued to press forward as the fourth official indicated that there would be four minutes of added time. Time enough for Green to stride forward, cut in from the right and rifle a shot across Rene Gilmartin and into the far corner.

The winger’s joy was unbridled as he celebrated his first goal for the club. Green ran to the corner flag and aimed a Tim Cahill-esque punch at it before running to the fans behind the goal. Brendan Malone was obviously still full of Christmas cheer as he ushered the Addicks back for the restart, a stricter referee might have brandished a second yellow at the happy scorer.

There was still time for Yeovil to pack all eleven players into the penalty area for a late corner and Hamer was called upon to make his best save of the afternoon at the death.

A deserved victory for the visitors – even if they did leave it late – was made all the sweeter by the news of Sheffield Wednesday’s late capitulation at Walsall.
